A mixed used development to convert an old building into 4 new flats – 1 studio flat, 2 one-bed flats and 1 two-bed flat, as well as modernising the existing Duke of Wellington Pub on the ground floor.
Architecture practice scaleruler.co was commissioned by the principal contractor (VIC Construction Ltd) to assist procurement and management of this project. Their role included sourcing internal materials from doors, windows, kitchens and lighting to finishes such as tiles and flooring.
Adrian Tsang, architect principal at scaleruler.co gave an insight into the interior design brief for the project, “The brief was to deliver a luxurious yet reasonably priced interior that goes in line with the client’s other properties in Central London. Nature of the rented properties means that low maintenance and high durability are key factors in selecting materials. The client also preferred contrasting colours such as black and white, with a rustic touch, to accentuate the heritage nature of the area as well as the building itself.”
The team at our Clerkenwell Design Studio worked with Adrian to find the perfect tiles for the brief. Marble effect tiles are often the first choice when luxurious is mentioned in a brief and this project benefits from the use of marble effect tiles in both the kitchen and bathroom areas. The kitchen wall features Wemyss, a 600x600mm polished porcelain that complements the darker tones of the sleek kitchen units. Randolph in white was chosen for the bathrooms, a hexagonal tile that creates an eye-catching geometric look. It’s paired with Shimla Thornbury on the floor, a patterned tile that makes a bold statement and is reminiscent of traditional encaustic tiles.
“The tiles were an important part of the internal finishes,” explains Adrian, “and by combining the marble effect with a bold patterned option from Parkside we were able to create the look that the client was looking for – luxurious with a rustic touch.”
