Mas by Alusid

Held in UK stock, Mas is the first mass-produced floor and wall tile made from 98.5% pre-consumer recycled content and has significantly less carbon emissions than normal ceramic tiles.

Make the Move to Lower Carbon Tiles with Mas

Developed by Alusid®, Mas offers commercial grade performance in a mass-produced tile that takes waste from tile manufacturing to create sustainable floor and wall and tiles. Mas has 51% less embodied CO2 and uses 44% less water than conventional ceramic tiles.

The world's first mass produced 98% recycled wall & floor tile

Made from between 95% and 98.5% recycled materials (depending on the colour), Mas transforms an abundant volume of material that would otherwise likely end up in a landfill.

Mas uses by-products aggregated from multiple industries, and from various parts of the production process - both pre and post-fired. Crucially, the production of Mas uses a unique low-energy dry granulation process. By only adding a small amount of water to the recovered raw materials that have already been processed by other industries, Alusid is able to reduce the use of natural gas and electricity.

In a comparative study of Mas’ third-party verified cradle to gate emissions against the Spanish ceramic tile industry EPD compiled using data from 55% of ASCER members, Mas recorded 51% less embodied carbon and uses 44% less water. It has a total GWP of 6.09kg CO2e per m2.

Alusid Mas by Parkside

Developed by Alusid to reuse ceramic tile waste

Mas has been created by Alusid®, a creator of eco-friendly surfaces. Alusid started its life as a research project at the University of Central Lancashire by Dr Alasdair Bremner and Professor David Binns that aimed to explore the ways waste and low value materials could be reused rather than ending up as landfill. It was also important that the process used to manufacture would use less energy than conventional tile manufacturing.

In 2019, Alusid and Parkside launched Sequel Vibe, a wall tile created using 98% recycled materials from post-consumer glass and pre-consumer vitrified ceramic carefully bound during a low-impact, hand-made manufacturing process. Because of the hand-made nature of Sequel Vibe, production rates are limited and difficult to scale to mass production.

For Mas, Alusid has unlocked a unique low impact manufacturing process to create a tile that has the performance for commercial use, and which is made entirely from by-products of the tile industry, including roof tiles and porcelain tiles. The dry granulation process used also contributes to its low impact, using significantly less energy and water than conventional ceramic tile production.

High recycled content tiles available from UK stock

With 36+PTV, 35N+ breaking strength and less than 3% water absorption, Mas is a highly functional solution for today’s commercial interiors.

Mas is available from UK stock in two size formats for floor and wall – 19.8 x 19.8cm and 19.8 x 9.7cm – and four colours. In Grey, Ochre, Red and Charcoal, Mas is a contemporary take on a quarry tile with an unusual shape that stands out and provides greater design flexibility.

Unlike other sustainable tiles which may require specialist installation and maintenance, and that often come with a high cost, Mas can be treated in the same way as standard porcelain wall and floor tiles.
